Dial-a-Bus Benton County logo Newsletter
Summer 2010

Letter from the Office
Some reasonable changes to our core services that you need to be aware of are as follows:

Beginning July 1, 2010, we will be reducing capacity and service hours for weekend services with the reduction of one driver/route for each day. Saturday's service will end at 7pm rather than the current 9pm.

All administrative hours and operational expenses are being carefully monitored for potential reductions.

Dial-A-Bus has consistently been prudent in their expenditures and will continue to be good stewards of the revenues that are received into the program.

While all of this is happening, our need to relocate the Dial- A-Bus operations will continue. The Parks and Recreation Dept. expect us to be gone by the summer of 2013 so you see it is not a matter of "if" but "when". We are also very aware that there are many programs in the community with need but we hope that providing mobility to seniors and persons with disabilities becomes a priority for some as help is going to be needed. Transportation is one of those services that fall through the cracks very often as it is not identified as a need until you have none.

It has taken several years of hard work to connect communities on all sides and we are excited to begin service North and South early September which will connect Adair Village to Corvallis and Monroe/Junction City to Corvallis. This will be a six month pilot project at which time will be monitored for ridership and potential continuation. This service will be funded through a grant with the Department of Transportation, ODOT.

As the old saying goes "while one door closes another opens" and we want you, our clients, to know that your needs as seniors and persons with disabilities are our first priority.

Always feel free to phone with questions or concerns.

Until our next issue take good care,
Linda E. Elder, Executive Director

Board of Directors
Update

The DAB Board of Directors has held their second retreat. The primary purpose was to review the events of the past year, refine the strategic plan, evaluate current bylaws and mission for the organization, and continue discussions on a new building and how to get that building. The building will not happen immediately; the building process will be in phases to include purchasing property and designing the facility; preparing and installing utilities, parking and fencing; placing a structure; and finally a maintenance shed. This is a huge project for DAB and very necessary to continue the services we provide which allow our clients to live independently with the quality of life they deserve.

DAB offers a very unique transportation option to the people of Benton County, especially seniors and disabled. The program has expanded to Albany three days a week, to the Coast three days a week, and soon will be providing a six month-long trial service to Adair and Monroe five days a week and to Junction City two days a week. The economic situation in the country is opening up funding for senior transportation and connecting counties and public transportation in rural areas. DAB is fortunate to have a very workable system in place, and the ability to utilize the contacts with sources of funding.

If you have suggestions or concerns, please drop by DAB or give us a call.

Hygiene

As the days finally begin to warm up we often begin to receive more comments from our drivers about hygiene issues.

Cleanliness is imperative to a healthy lifestyle. The germs and bacteria that you may come in contact with on a daily basis can be harsh on the body, therefore it is essential to maintain good personal hygiene.

★Wash your hands after using the restroom, prior to eating, before and after preparing food.
★Brush your teeth 2-3 times per day. This aids in preventing dental problems and chronic bad breath.
★Wear clean clothing. Clothing should be changed and cleaned once it is soiled.
★Shower daily. You will feel better and be more refreshed. Remember you may not smell your body odor, but others do.
★Keep nails trimmed and clean.
★Wear deodorant, but avoid strong colognes and perfumes. Strong scents especially in warmer weather can negatively affect those around you.

These measures are short compilation of the steps we should take daily to maintain good health and well-being. In addition they display respect for one self and the others around you.

Mary's River Quilt Guild Quilt Raffle
It's time for our Annual Quilt Raffle. The grand prize is a beautiful quilt from the Mary's River Quilt Guild (dimensions are 63.5in. wide and 70in. long). The funds generated from this event are used by Dial-A-Bus to offer clients with limited incomes a subsidy that is credited to their account. Last year we raised over $2000.00 and hope to match the amount this year. Tickets are $2.00 a piece or 3 for $5.00. In addition to the quilt we will have multiple other prizes from local merchants. We will begin to sell tickets July 15th and the drawing will be in September.
If every client purchased one ticket we would meet and exceed our goal of $2000.00!

Remember to buy your tickets!

How to Use Dial-A-Bus
Call Ahead
To schedule a trip with Dial-A-Bus you need to call ahead at least one (1 ) day prior to your appointment and you can call up to seven (7) days ahead to schedule. The number to call is (541) 752-2615. The numbers listed for the Executive Director and Assistant Director are not to be used for scheduling, they are for administrative business only.

Be Ready
Be prepared for your scheduled pick up time at least 15 minutes early. Also due to the high volume of people we transport and events beyond our control (traffic, construction, etc.) we cannot always be at our pick up exactly at the time scheduled. Allow 15 minutes either side of your scheduled pick up time.

Carry-On Items
Please limit your packages to two (2) grocery bags. Remember our drivers are volunteers and their mission is to provide transportation.

Let Us Know
If you have a special situation, let us know. We will do our best to accommodate your needs.
No Show Policy
Our program transports hundreds of individuals per day with the assistance of our volunteers. Sometimes our drivers reach their scheduled destination and the client is not there or has decided to cancel without calling the office 2 hours prior to their pick up time.

When this happens it is labeled a No Show.
The client then will receive notice that this has occurred. Once an individual has three (3) No Shows in a six (6) month period they will be suspended for one (1) month.

This policy is in place to ensure that our program runs efficiently and we can serve as many people as possible. A no show costs the program time and money that could have been used to assist another individual.

So remember if you have scheduled an appointment with us and decide you will not need it call us (541)752-2615 and we will cancel your trip and open up the time for someone else.
